Player Agent - Deb Bettencourt
A little about me...
joined the Slaterettes as a player in 1981 when I was 9 years old—this is where people stop, do the math, and then say “wow, she doesn’t look that old!” (Thank you in advance for that!) The league didn’t have an adult division at that time so I had to “retire” from playing in 1989. I decided to do what a lot of retired baseball players do—COACH! Coaching led to joining the Board of Directors and 30+ years later I am still here! I have seen so many great changes in the league over the years. When I played, the Boys and Girls Club fields were nothing more than an old parking lot with 5 inches of dirt poured over it. We had to run up to the Club between innings to use the restroom and there were many nights when parents would turn on the headlights of their cars so we could get one last inning in. Back then there weren’t as many extracurricular activities available to us so we could often be found playing baseball in backyards or in the streets on our “off-nights”. I am very grateful for those pickup games because they fostered some of my best friendships with girls that I am still close with today—many of whom are listed on this Board of Directors page (yes, we are all that old!) I look forward to introducing my daughter to the Slaterettes when she is old enough to play and I hope she is able to have the great experiences I have had with this league. I wish that for all of our players!
If someone were to ask me what my “legacy” was with the league, I would have to say it is the Adult Division! I tried for a long time to get the league to create playing opportunities for our former players and am happy to say that I was finally able to wear them down! Many of our current Board Members are also players, as well as many of the moms from the younger divisions. I encourage everyone to come check out a game.
Lastly, I have to say that the Pawtucket Slaterettes would not have survived this long without the support and dedication of our Board Members, parents and players. We would all be lost without our fearless leader, Sarah Feeley!!! I encourage you to get involved and help support the league any way you can. It truly is a rewarding experience!
