PAWTUCKET – Unfortunately Mother Nature doesn’t always provide brilliant sunshine. Pouring rain on Saturday, may have forced many other leagues to postpone or eliminate their scheduled opening ceremonies and baseball games, but it didn’t stop the Slaterettes from their holding their Opening Day and 30th Anniversary Celebration. The Slaterettes just went to Plan B and moved the event inside to the Shea High School Gymnasium and Cafeteria, and enjoyed themselves immensely.

The Opening Day festivities began with the first pitch of the season being thrown by Mayor James Doyle to Slaterette catcher Danielle Gard. The Slaterettes were then presented with a $500.00 check from the City of Pawtucket, to support the league.

This was followed up by the introduction of one of the league’s original founders, Al Vaslet. The Slaterettes have been a family affair for Al’s family, his daughter Valerie (Vaslet) Girourd who played in league’s first years, is now on the Slaterettes Board of Directors as Adult/Safety Director. Val’s two daughters (Erin and Shana) now play in the league on the Pawtucket Teachers Alliance team in the Junior division. Al’s daughter Pat (Vaslet) Smith and her husband Jay Smith have also been involved with the league as managers, coaches and as Board members for over 17 years, Pat is currently the league’s Uniform Director. Both of their daughters (Bree and Brittany) play in the league, they both started in the Instructional division and are still playing as adults in the league’s new Major Division. Al’s other grandchildren, daughters of Cheryl (Vaslet) McBurney, have also played in the league, with her son also serving as an umpire in the league. A family picture of the many generations of Vaslet’s involved with the Slaterettes, was taken and will be cherished by the league.

Also invited and recognized at the ceremony, were many of the leagues past Presidents, Jan Potter, Sandy Gula, Diane Thibeault, Ed Knight, Don Phanuef, and Steve Cooper. They were honored by presenting them with a special commemorative Slaterettes 30th Anniversary baseball hat.

League President, Dave Gard, then introduced the current Slaterettes Board of Directors; Vice President, Kenn Dunne; Player Agent, Deb Bettencourt; Treasurer, George Howe; Recording Secretary, Mark Hennigan; Corresponding Secretary
